Louis Armstrong International Airport Renovations

Kenall played a key role in the renovation of the Louis Armstrong International Airport (MSY), which underwent extensive upgrades in preparation for the 2013 Superbowl event. These renovations included terminal improvements, the addition of new terminals and parking garages, as well as runway extensions.

Kenall provided geotechnical services, focusing on Material Testing and Inspection in accordance with Advisory Circular (AC 150/5370-12A) standards for Quality Control of Construction on Airport Grant Projects. The specific services performed included:

Field inspections of concrete.
Inspection of welding and bolts, encompassing visual inspections of steel and welding, as well as ultrasonic and radiographic testing.
Field density testing of soils and asphalt.
Comprehensive geotechnical soil laboratory testing.

These efforts contributed to the safe and efficient execution of the airport’s modernization.

Alexandria International Airport Extension

Kenall conducted a comprehensive geotechnical investigation and provided services to support the Alexandria International Airport (AEX) extension, a key component of the airport’s 20-year Airfield Capital Improvement Program. As a crucial hub for UPS planes and a vital resource for northwest Louisiana, the expansion included a runway extension, ensuring the airport meets its future demands.

Our scope of services included installing soil borings, material testing of soils, field inspections and testing of concrete, asphalt, and soils, as well as laboratory analysis of soil samples. All work was carried out in adherence to the Advisory Circular (AC 150-5320-6E) Airport Pavement Design and Evaluation Manual, ensuring precision and compliance throughout the project.

K163 Channel Conveyance Improvements Project in Harris County

Kenall performed geotechnical services for Harris County Flood Control District (HCFCD) for the Channel Conveyance Improvements Project, located adjacent to Timberlake Estates Subdivision, in Harris County, Texas (Channel Unit K163-00-00, Key Map 368-L). This project focused on improving channel conveyance K163-00-00 to improve drainage in the Timberlake Estates Subdivision. The Channel is approximately 6,300 feet long, stretching from Cypress North Houston downstream to the vicinity of an existing concrete drop structure located 2,100 feet from the confluence of W/K100. The depth of the Channel varies along its length from approximately 4 feet to 20 feet, and retaining walls are included for certain channel sections.

Bissonnet Street Improvements, Upper Kirby Redevelopment Authority

Kenall furnished geotechnical services for a proposed roadway and utility reconstruction for Bissonnet St. between Buffalo Speedway and Kirby Drive in Houston, TX. The total project alignment length was approximately 2,907 linear feet, and associated new storm sewer lines varied in diameter between 24 and 54 inches.

Our responsibilities included: installing and sampling soil borings to evaluate stratigraphy and groundwater conditions, installing piezometers, performing soil laboratory tests in accordance with ASTM methods, and providing geotechnical engineering analyses and recommendations.

Luce Bayou Interbasin Transfer Project

Kenall was retained to provide geotechnical services for the proposed Luce Bayou Interbasin Transfer Project on Texas 321 in Dayton, Texas. The project consisted of construction of new buildings, associated pavement and a detention pond. The purpose of the geotechnical study was to evaluate soil and groundwater conditions and to provide design and construction recommendations.

We installed and sampled soil borings to determine soil stratigraphy and groundwater conditions, performed laboratory test in accordance with ASTM methods, and developed geotechnical engineering analyses and construction recommendations for the buildings foundation and associated pavement and detention pond.

Kenall conducted a thorough assessment of Lake Houston Dam, focusing on its current condition, associated structures, and potential safety risks. As the primary water source for Houston, Lake Houston’s stability is paramount.

The investigation included an extensive geotechnical analysis, combining field exploration—such as site inspections, boring and piezometer installation, and soil sampling—with laboratory and field testing. Additionally, a fault presence investigation was performed. The findings were compiled into a comprehensive geological evaluation and geotechnical report.

Wastewater Collection System and Richey Road Detention Pond

Kenall provided geotechnical engineering services to the City of Pasadena to evaluate the stability of the Richey Road detention pond. The evaluation was needed because the site slopes had breached due to heavy lateral earth pressure from the stored sludge.

Our investigation included a visual site inspection, multiple soil borings to evaluate subsurface stratigraphy and groundwater conditions, and the installation of wellpoint control systems to observe water level variations. We performed comprehensive laboratory soils testing. Our geotechnical engineering analyses included analysis of test results, site geological evaluation, total and differential settlement analysis, and slope stability analysis for the existing conditions. We provided recommendations for the reconstruction of slopes with factor of safety, recommendations for de-watering, and general construction recommendations.

Hurricane Harvey Debris Removal

Kenall is under the contract with City of Houston to perform the debris removal across various locations in the City. This project is one of the recovery projects for the City of Houston after Hurricane Harvey. This project consisted of collection and removal of debris from various locations and disposing at FEMA allocated landfill sites.

Water Line Replacement in Braeburn Terrace and Sharpstown Area

Kenall performed geotechnical investigation services for a water line replacement along several streets in the Braeburn Terrace Area in Houston, Texas. The project alignment was 29,215 feet in length, and water lines varied between six and twelve inches in diameter.

Our laboratory testing included moisture content, unit dry weight, liquid limit, plastic limit, abbreviated mechanical analysis, complete mechanical analysis, hydrometer analysis, unconfined compression, unconsolidated undrained compressive strength (Q test), consolidated undrained Triaxial strength (R test), one dimensional consolidation.

Kenall’s commitment to public infrastructure was exemplified through its work on post-Hurricane Katrina support services to the City of New Orleans. The new $20.5 million Andrew P. Sanchez & Copelin-Byrd Multi-Service Center in the historic Lower Ninth Ward was an example of these efforts. This state-of-the-art facility replaced the original center destroyed during the hurricane and underscored the vital role they played in coordinated emergency response efforts to protect lives and accelerate recovery in affected communities.

Kenall played a pivotal role in the administration and compliance of federal regulations and GLO/FEMA guidelines in their approach to materials testing and inspection. Key responsibilities included sampling subgrade, fill, and stabilized soils for moisture-density, in-place compaction testing of soils and asphalt, field inspection and testing of concrete, welding and bolt inspection, non-destructive testing of welds, and plate load testing.
